We all know the wonders of pork products, and bacon in particular. It has proven itself as the cure for bland food, hunger pangs, and even depression. But bacon, (they’re technically calling it ‘cured pork’) apparently has a whole new use, and can even be used to cure NOSEBLEEDS! Yes you read that correctly, nosebleeds. The findings of a recent medical study provided these amazing results:
“Cured salted pork crafted as a nasal tampon and packed within the nasal vaults successfully stopped nasal hemorrhage promptly, effectively, and without sequelae. In both applications, the patient had complete cessation of nasal bleeding within 24 hours, and was discharged within 72 hours after treatment. “
So once again, bacon has proven itself even more mightier than we all thought, and still reigns supreme as the ultimate pork product. When speaking of bacon, I believe Jim Gaffigan said it best: “The only bad part about bacon is that it makes you thirsty…………for more bacon.”
Congrats to The Highball Austin for being named to Food & Wine’s “Best Fried Chicken in the U.S.” list. Now I’ve been to The Highball many a time for karaoke, concerts, and for cocktails post movie at the Alamo Drafthouse next door, but wasn’t aware that they served up a mean yard bird. Hopefully it’s as good as they say, obviously I need to stop in for a plate.

Joey Vento passed away yesterday from a heart attack at the age of 71. Vento was the founder of the world famous Geno’s Steaks in Philadelphia. Located at the epicenter of the Philly Cheese Steak, which is the famous ‘X’ intersection of 9th & Passyunk, in South Philly. At this intersection, Geno’s Steaks and Pat’s King of Steaks are located directly across the street from each other where they serve up more Cheese Steaks than any other location on earth, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Check out the video below showcasing the never ending debate over who’s are the best.
So go treat yourself to a Philly Cheasesteak sandwich and pay tribute to a food legend. If you’re here in Austin I recommend Hog Island Deli, which serves up the best Cheese Steaks I’ve had here.
The restaurant located at 2700 South Lamar will move just a bit further south down the street to occupy the space which formerly housed Blockbuster Video. The new location will increase their footprint from approximately 3,000 to 5,500 square feet, as well as including outdoor patio seating.
The new location should really help them increase capacity, as well as much more parking. The moved is scheduled to take place before the end of the year. In a press release, owners David Ayer & Patricia Atkinson stated that: ”We are sad to leave our old home, but we look forward to developing this new space in a manner that is of, from, and for this part of Austin that has supported and sustained us for many years.”

Yes, you read that title correctly. Apparently there’s an “Underground Meat Theft Ring” in Austin which had been stealing meat from local H.E.B. grocery stores and selling it to restaurants on the east side of town. The Austin Police Department has arrested 5 suspects in the sting they dubbed: “Operation Meat Locker”.
They claim that their biggest concern was not of the shoplifting, but for the public’s safety due to the health risk of unsafe and contaminated food products. The three east side restaurants which have had their business permits and/or health licenses revoked include: Sam’s BBQ, La Morenita, and Willie’s BBQ. Watch the video segments below.

Back in 1977 the Mayor of Buffalo, NY officially named July 29th as “National Chicken Wing Day”. The city of Buffalo is known as the birthplace of the Buffalo Wing due to their original start and creation at the world famous ‘Anchor Bar‘ in 1964. Located in the heart of Buffalo, the Anchor Bar has become world famous and has garnered recognition and numerous awards, including one from the James Beard Foundation. As a regular destination for tourists throughout the area, The Anchor Bar claims to serve over one thousand pounds of their famous chicken wings every day. If you’re ever in the area be sure to stop by for an an American culinary classic!
For the rest of us who are no where near the birthplace of the original buffalo wing, I suggest you head to your favorite wing spot or neighborhood bar and get yourself a plate of wings this evening and celebrate with me.

There’s a great new App for your phone designed to help you find mobile food trailers and street carts. This App is brought to you by Food Network Canda, and is full of some really innovative features that allow you to see menus, search locations, and use interactive maps. Vendors can also list their hours of operation, menus, specials, pictures, twitter feed, and provide information to their profile with links to their websites and Facebook pages. This App is not just for Austin, but is functional throughout North America.
At the time of this post there were already about 200 vendors listed for the Austin area. However, since it is still very new, many of the vendors shown only have their location listed and maybe a link to their website. Most of them of still lacking on the interactive features, menus, twitter feed, etc. However, I feel this App has a ton of potential and should gather a huge following, especially here in Austin where our city and residents have come to fully embrace mobile food vendors.
Along with the launch of this mobile phone APP, Food Network Canada has also launched a TV series to show off some of the great food trucks from across the country. Well known Austin trucks Izzo’s Tacos, Lucky J’s Chicken & Waffles, and G’Raj Mahal have already been featured in the first few episodes.
So when you’re out at your favorite food carts tell them about this App and ask them to get their information updated. It will not only improve the functionality of this App, but also help drive more sales to their location.
